Birds only collect symbols directly adjacent horizontally or vertically - diagonal positions don't count. When no more collections are possible, adjacent birds may randomly swap positions to create new winning opportunities.

Each of the four crystal colours (red, purple, green, blue) exists in five upgrade levels. Base crystals pay small amounts, but collecting white upgrade symbols increases their level, adding golden crowns and multiplying payouts:
